You can’t make them care

There are a certain skills you probably look when hiring for a position at a small business. There are also a number of skills you can train on the job. You can train how to run a machine. You can teach better ways of taking phone calls from customers. The one thing I’ve learned over the years that you cannot teach, is to genuinely care. Sure, you can make an employee feel bad if they make a mistake on an order. Did it really bother them though? If you didn’t point it out to them, would it be something they thought about on their own for the rest of the day? Do they like what they are doing or are they doing it just for a paycheck? Hire the people that want to be there and can help make the business better because they want to on their own. Hire those who care, because you can’t make them care.
