When interviewing for a new position at a small business, it is important to hire someone who could be great at the job, not just great at the interview. During an interview, be careful when all the answers to your questions are positive and in the applicant’s favor. No one is perfect, and acting perfect on an interview can be a flaw in itself. Some of my best hires gave honest answers to questions that were not the perfect answers. For example, if you ask, “How do you organize your desk at home, and is it neat?” The easy answer from an applicant is “Yes, it is very neat.” I recently had an applicant say, “My desk at home is not very neat. I should take pride in it, the way that I have always kept my work areas neat in my previous jobs.” This response not only answers the question honestly, but it shows that the applicant isn’t trying to fool you or craft the perfect answer. If everything is perfect in their answers, it’s very likely that everything isn’t.
